William Morris Golden Lily Art Print
William Morris Golden Lily Art Print
Golden Lily is one of William Morris's most enduringly popular textile designs — and one of the most instantly recognisable. Designed around 1899 and produced by Morris & Co., the pattern features a sinuous arrangement of lilies, tulips and curling acanthus leaves in deep indigo and rich golden tones that give the design its name.
About the design
Golden Lily represents Morris at his most technically accomplished. The design uses a flowing, symmetrical repeat that draws the eye across the surface in a continuous, rhythmic movement — a hallmark of Morris's approach to decorative pattern. Unlike some of his more complex, layered designs, Golden Lily achieves its impact through elegant simplicity: a controlled palette of deep blue, gold and green, and botanical forms reduced to their most graceful essentials.
The original was produced as a woven wool textile, intended for curtains and upholstery. Its relatively restrained palette compared to designs like Strawberry Thief made it one of Morris & Co.'s most versatile and commercially successful patterns — and it remains so today, held in the collections of the V&A and reproduced widely in collaboration with major British retailers.

How to style it
Golden Lily's deep indigo and gold palette works beautifully in living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. It suits traditional British interiors particularly well, but the strong graphic quality of the design also sits naturally in contemporary spaces. Pairs beautifully with other Morris designs — Strawberry Thief, Willow Bough or Acanthus — for a gallery wall with a cohesive Arts and Crafts feel. A natural wood or gilded frame enhances the warmth of the golden tones.
