The Ten Largest, No. 10, Old Age closes the series Hilma af Klint painted in 1907. A heavy black arc sweeps across a soft lilac ground, holding a dark almond form at its centre, with pale pink and yellow discs gathered above and three quiet circles resting below — one yellow and orange, one black, one palest blue.

It is the most inward of the ten. The looping script and the word Hvete (Swedish for wheat) are written directly onto the canvas in her own symbolic hand, and everything sits lower and stiller than in the earlier paintings. Youth was all yellow; this is dusk.

That restraint makes it the easiest of the series to live with. The lilac ground is warm rather than cold, the black gives real structure, and the small hits of orange and yellow stop it feeling sombre. Beautiful in a bedroom, study or hallway, and very good against warm neutrals, oak and linen.
