The Ten Largest, No. 7, Adulthood comes from the series Hilma af Klint painted in 1907 — ten enormous canvases, each one charting a stage of human life. This is the middle of it: circles and loops drifting across a dusty rose ground, in pale blue, butter yellow, cream and a thin thread of coral red.

It is the calmest of the series, and the easiest to live with. The colours are soft without being washed out, and the composition floats rather than fills, so it reads as quiet even at large sizes. Af Klint asked that these paintings stay unseen for twenty years after her death — she thought the world wasn't ready for them.

Beautiful in a bedroom, nursery or any room with warm neutral walls, and it pairs naturally with pale wood, linen, rattan and cane.
