A moody early Kandinsky seascape from his pre-abstraction years — a heavy bank of storm cloud sitting on a teal horizon, a small pale steamer trailing smoke, a dark jetty reaching in from the right and a lamp post on the sandy foreground bank. Thickly painted with a palette knife, the canvas weave showing through the sea.

Painted well before the Murnau landscapes and the Bauhaus abstractions, works like this show Kandinsky already letting colour carry the mood — green-grey sky against deep blue water, one cream hull catching the last light.
