Vintage Babar Hot Air Balloon Print | Le Voyage de Babar French Riviera Wall Art

A marigold balloon drifts silently over the sea. In its wicker basket, Babar and Céleste lean out to take in the view, one peering through a little telescope, as a whole sunlit coastline unfolds beneath them. Terracotta rooftops cluster around a curving bay, cypress trees stand tall beside a pink farmhouse, and the golden beach is dotted with tiny bathers and striped huts. Sailing boats skim across water of the deepest blue, while far below hens, goats and dogs wander through the olive groves.

This much-loved spread comes from Le Voyage de Babar, first published in Paris in 1932 by Jean de Brunhoff, and keeps his original handwritten French verse in the sky. The lines tell how the land of the elephants is far behind them now, the air is soft, the wind is light, and there below lies the sea, the great blue sea.

We've set it within a slate blue and cream striped border, like a seaside awning on the Riviera. It's a joyful piece for a nursery, playroom or reading nook, and just as lovely in a hallway or coastal living room. A perfect gift for little adventurers and for anyone who remembers Babar from their own childhood.
